God has planned to dwell among people. We have learned that at the center of God’s plan and purposes (even if not at the center of each book of the Old Testament), as revealed in the Bible, is his intent to be present with his people. It did not begin at the incarnation or with the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. It began at Eden, and when his presence was lost there, a second initiative was launched in the covenant that led to the reestablishment of his presence in the tabernacle, made possible for the people by the revelation of the Torah. He established his rule among them, and in some senses, through them. He continues to carry out that purpose today as he indwells his people. The incarnation and the indwelling are only the most recent manifestations of this plan, a plan that will reach its culmination in new creation (Rev 21).
